Mental Health Services

AYCC offers a range of mental health services to support our community. You can read more about our services below. If you have questions or need more information about accessing our services, please contact AYCC’s Intake Coordinator at 781-316-3251 or email llabrecque@town.arlington.ma.us.

Individual and Family Therapy

AYCC provides individual and family counseling to Arlington residents whose presenting problems involve children or adolescents ages 3 to 21. Children learn and develop through a wide range of activities and experiences. AYCC approaches each child and family in a flexible manner, working with clients to find the mode that works best for them. This process involves an intake assessment – gathering individual background information, family history, level of current functioning, problem areas and strengths – resulting in a treatment plan. Common areas of concern that people bring to AYCC are: anxiety, depression, parent-child conflicts, family changes such as divorce or loss, alcohol or substance abuse, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, major mental illness, school adjustment, social relationships, and behavioral concerns. Modalities available at AYCC include: talking therapy that is cognitive or insight oriented, play therapy, expressive therapy, sandtray therapy, motivational interviewing, and social skills training. Emphasis is placed on involvement with both parents and children, based on the idea that neither parent nor child is at fault for problems within the family.

Group Therapy

Periodically, the Arlington Youth Counseling Center offers groups for parents/caregivers and youth.  Recognizing the unique role that peer support can play in mental health, these groups provide a critical space to learn skills and tools, while connecting with others. Information about new groups is sent out via email when these opportunities arise.

School-Based Services

“Project Success”

The Arlington Youth Counseling Center partners with the Arlington Public Schools to provide school-based mental health counseling and consultation services, known as Project Success.

Project Success offers support to students (and their families) whose underlying mental health conditions contribute to a range of social, behavioral, and school-performance related problems.

In addition to working with students and their families, clinicians consult regularly with teachers and school social workers to assess progress and to support the individual needs of each student.

Referrals to the program are typically made by classroom teachers or school social workers who are familiar with the unique needs of each student. Project Success students are considered active clients of AYCC, and can come to the center for individual or family counseling, as well as medication treatment, if needed. All counseling sessions are billable through insurance, or funded through AYCC’s grant assistance program.

Medication

For many children and adolescents with mental health challenges, medication is an important part of treatment, helping to reduce or eliminate severe or persistent symptoms and improve daily functioning. Psychiatry is available at AYCC for existing child and adolescent clients. AYCC clinicians, in consultation with clients' parents/caregivers, may make referrals for psychiatric evaluation or consultation with AYCC's Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, when needed.
